Non-contact thickness gauge

The Elcometer 550 is a non-contact thickness gauge which uses a new, patented ultrasonic measurement principle. It can calibrate to measure all uncured polyester and mixed powder coatings applied to a range of smooth metal substrate materials such as aluminum and steel.  This non-contact thickness gauge has been developed by Elcometer Instruments, specialists in coating process quality control for over fifty years.

By using this non-contact thickness gauge to calculate the thickness of the powder immediately after spraying and before the coating is cured, significant savings can be achieved. At times the saving can be up to of 10-30%. All these materials have their certain cost. And this non-contact thickness gauge help prevents wastage, which in turn pays for its own purchase cost.

Product wastage usually occurs due to two reason- one thin coating or excess coating. This non-contact thickness gauge allows the material to measured and decipher if there is thin coating application or excess coating thickness. In turn, it would prevent wasteful usage of the resultant high material.

Weighing only 1.6 kg, the gauge is handheld.  Its pistol-style probe makes, it easy and convenient to use. The probe measures over an area of approximately 1 mm diameter so the system is suitable for relatively small parts. Since the non-contact thickness gauge is sealed against dust ingress, the Elcometer 550 can be used right next to the spray booth.

And it is completely portable as it has interchangeable rechargeable battery. The Elcometer 550, non-contact thickness gauge, comes with a fully charged battery pack which has a capacity of over 300 measurements. A spare pack is also provided with the kit as standard with the intention that one pack can be charged while the other pack is being used.

The Elcometer 550 can measure materials with in a range of 30-110 mm and a display resolution of 1 mm over this range of thickness. The gauge can measure up to an accuracy of ±5 µm. When the probe is held 17 mm off the surface that is being measured, the energy indicators on the probe handle assist the operator to align the probe with the surface to be measured. The operator initiates the measurement sequence and when the probe is correctly aligned the measurement count starts automatically until the user stops the sequence.

RS232 data output for communication with a computer, average reading display and pre-set limits with alarm for both high and low coating thicknesses, are some of other featured offered by The Elcometer 550, the non-contact thickness gauge.
